Koperasi Pedagang Kopi (KOPEPI) Ketiara, to give them their full name are lead by Rahmah Ketiara, who established a well respected reputation for Fair Trade coffee when the group started exporting back in 2013 (they were formed in 2008). Spread across 19 villages in the Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah regions of Sumatra, they have continually pushed for improvements and are innovatively and community minded, most recently creating a project coffee with us to help maintain the balance in agroforestry amongst their growers.
These growers return year after year due to the high prices paid for their coffee by KOPEPI and the projects -all of their coffee is Fair Trade and Organic certified – as well as benefits given such as free seedlings of coffee, avocado or oranges, or rice at the end of the flat months of no production. Training is given in how to produce and apply fertilizer, and even aerobic fitness classes run. Seventy-five percent of the co-op is made up of women.
