Coffee and a chat with Mika from Mokkamestarit

How did you come up with the name Mokkamestarit?
Mokkamestarit means ‘masters’ in Finnish, I felt confident from the beginning!

How long have you been in business and how did the idea start?
The company was established in 1990, we were one of the first to start roasting speciality coffee in Finland. I started to drink coffee very early on in my childhood, and when I learned later in life that you can actually roast it yourself that was it.

What’s your favourite thing about living in your town?
My home town Tampere has several big market places which are buzzing with life in the summer time. I like to get fresh vegetables, berries and fish for my cooking and hang around there whenever I have the time.

Where’s your favourite place nearby to visit?
At least once a year I like to visit the national park Helvetinjärven kansallispuisto, which is just one hour drive away from home. The wilderness and the untouched nature there is a great place to relax and unwind.

Which is your favourite origin and why?
My favourite coffee origin is Guatemala Huehuetenango at the moment, I love the complexity in the character of that area´s coffees.

What’s your favourite brewing method?

I’m a great fan of espressos, but when it comes to pour-overs I like to use Chemex.

How do you take your coffee?
I take my coffee straight black, cooled down a bit.

What’s life outside roasting like for you?
Besides this coffee business, I also do up old or broken coffee machinery, mainly coffee grinders and espresso machines. The latest project was four group Faema e-61. My big dream is to modernise an old roasting machine.

Where was the last place you travelled to?
My latest trip was to Italy

What was the last book you read?
The latest book I read was called: Medicine free life by a doctor and an author Antti Heikkilä.

What’s your biggest passion or love?
My biggest passion is coffee

How and what do you do to unwind? Do you have a mantra you live by?
Besides my love for coffee I do love music and I’ve trained in dancing over the years. My favourite steps are rockabilly and jive. That´s the best way to unwind for me and I could recommend it to others too. I guess my motto would be: ”Just dance your worries away”
