Caramel, raisin, apricot, marshmallow
Swiss Water Decaf’s Ratnagiri Estate offering comes from India’s Western Ghats, a mountain range in Southern India considered to be the motherland of Indian coffee. The estate, situated between 1,250–1,450 MASL, has been producing coffee for nearly a century. In recent years, owner Ashok Patre decided to modernize, optimizing fertilization and plantings, setting the stage for better and better harvests to come.
Patre has led the farm in experimental processing, including the production of microlots of anaerobic fermentations of natural and honey processed coffees. Over the past few years, investments have also been made in a new ECOpulper, raised drying beds, and a brand new dry-milling facility that can accommodate small lots.
Most importantly, Ratnagiri has invested in its people. Increased worker training —and salaries— have improved standards of picking and cherry selection at harvest, and the quality of life and commitment of the people who make these coffees a reality. The result has been some truly captivating coffees that begin to showcase the potential of speciality in India.
For this Small Batch selection, the folk at SWD put together three of their favorite lots which, together, wonderfully express all that they felt coffee from this region can be. The coffee comprises primarily honey-processed Catuai coffees which bring sweetness and fruit to the cup, combined with a delicious washed coffee that adds balance and a creamy texture. We hope you enjoy this truly unique decaf from India!
