U Kyaw Htwe Naing uses a huge amount of buffalo dung each year in order to run in his 75 acre farm in an organic fashion, and this is similar to a lot of farmers in the region as it is the main source of fertilizer. Silver Oak and Macadamia nuts are the predominant trees used to provide shade for the 70 acres of coffee, and the macadamia also provides an alternative income stream. Accommodation is provided on the estate for the pickers, that number 10-12 during the season, with double that during the picking.
Founded in 2003, the farm consists of Costa Rica (really a Catimor that was brought over from Costa Rica), S795 (common in India and Indonesia), and SL34 (the Scott Labs selection in the 1930’s from Kenya). It is the latter variety that has been separated and selected for natural processing for this lot. Harvest times are longer than others due to large amounts of shade trees, with Catimor producing twice as much per plant than the SL34 in these conditions.
