Choc, redcurrant and blackberry.
Gakui Farmers Cooperative society was established in 2014 after splitting from Kandara Farmers Cooperative Society. The Cooperative has 1 wet mill and covers electoral zones of Mukoe, Mwania Mburi, Kagongo, Karabai, Kirii, Matiraini, Kiratina, and Kagono.
They are managed by an elected board of 7 members. Each member represents an electoral zone in the location. Currently the Coop has 4 permanent members of staff who are headed by a Secretary Manager. The Secretary Manager is the Chief Executive Officer overseeing the day to day running of the Coop under the supervision of the board.
The cooperative’s current production stands at 200,000 Kg of Cherry. The goal is to increase their yields to over 300,000 Kgs in the next season through the adoption of good agricultural practices by the farmers.
Farmers selectively hand pick red ripe cherries that are delivered for wet milling the same day. The parchment is then fermented, washed and graded. The parchment is then dried under the sun to a moisture content of 10.5 -11.5%. The dry parchment is then hulled, graded, sorted, bagged and marketed by Sustainable Management Services Ltd either through the Nairobi Coffee Exchange Auction or direct sale to overseas buyers. The coop has been marketing its coffee with Sustainable Management Services Ltd from 2014 to date.
