Java Semeru

Cupping notes

Cocoa nibs, vanilla, clove, and leather. soft and rounded cup.

Description

Named after Java’s Mount Semeru, an active volcano to the east of the island, smallholder farmers produce this Canephora from the slopes slightly east of the mountain.

Located within Kecamatan Kalibaru, stretching down from the active volcano Mount Raung, the fertile slopes provide plenty of ash to compensate for the limited amount of space for agriculture. OF the 600 smallholders that contribute to this lot, total hectarage is only 3600, splayed out between 300 and 600masl. July to October, following the rains, fills the slopes with an abundance of flowers, before ripening

The BGN varietals stretch back to at least pre-1960’s, and are said to comprise of several species such as C. canephora var. robusta, Hibrida C. conuga, and C. canephora. They are also separated into several sub-sub groups, meaning that the diversity within this series is higher than compared to others.
