Colombia CGLE Mandela HW

Cupping notes

Gummy bears, whiskey, blueberry, lychee. A touch of olive. Sweet, slick, and rounded.

Description

Mandela is a varietal born of Cafe Granja, and of La Esperanza, too. A self pollinated selection from Caturra x Caturra,  the beans that gave the best characteristics were then selected. This was then crossed with the Timor Hybrid in order to provide some resistance to rust, before being crossed again with Ethiopian landrace varietals such as Sudan Rume, Daleco, and Villa Sarchi. The offspring from those were then selected for the best performing and the varietal stabilised, with the resultant trees exhibiting both bronze and green tips.

La Esperanza is one of 5 farms owned by Cafe Granja, this one close to Cerro Azul in Valle del Cauca, sharing (and home to) the processing facilities.

This consists of the washing station, barrels for fermentation and experimental fermentation, mechanical drying facilities and raised beds in a green house. A new cupping room is being built (completion is due June/July 2022) for visitors to taste the coffees while stay

The hybrid washed process involves an initial dry fermentation stage before the traditional washed process is utilised. Typically this is between 24-40 hours for first fermentation and 24-36 hours after pulping. Beans are then solar dried, on raised beds in the green house. Once the coffee is dried, it’s taken to the climate controlled warehouse in Caicedonia, home of the cupping lab and QC facility.
