Brazil Vinte

Cupping notes

A rich and sweet coffee with notes of chocolate, hazelnut and marzipan.

Description

Vinte is a blend consisting of speciality coffee grown by twenty producers in Nova Resende, South of Minas in Brazil. Developed in partnership with SMC, our export partner in the region, Vinte aims to support smallholder growers in Brazil by helping to increase their access to the speciality coffee market.

Nova Resende is a small town located in the south of Minas Gerais state. The area has relied on coffee farming historically for its development. Today, it is a large and well-developed rural area with interesting terroir, unique climatic conditions and fertile soils to grow high-quality coffee.

The Vinte blend consists of coffee from twenty smallholder producers in Nova Resende, each growing coffee on farms averaging just 7.5 hectares in size located in altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 1,250 meters above sea level.

The Vinte blend was developed through the Especialíssimo program, which Cooxupé runs in partnership with SMC in Guaxupé. Cooxupé has over 14 thousand cooperative members, 90% of which are smallholder producers working with family farming. The Especialíssimo Program was established in 2016 to give these smallholder producers more opportunities, bringing them closer to the speciality coffee market by delivering training courses, lectures and professional qualifications.

Nova Resende is one of the municipalities with the most extensive participation in the Especialíssimo program. In September 2021, speciality coffees from more than 200 producers were identified in the region, alongside the neighbouring city of Bom Jesus da Penha, and submitted through Nova Resende’s Cooxupé Center. From these producers, twenty were selected for the Vinte blend due to their distinctive cup profiles.

Below are the names and farm details of the 20 producers selected for the Vinte blend:

Renovation and innovation, notes on Brazil

31 August 2018

Nick and I (Jamie) headed out at the end of July to Sao Paulo with a day to briefly recover and explore the nearby Ibirapuera Park. We’d be up at 5am Monday for the next leg heading up to Minas Gerais, a state divided in to four parts (Sul de Minas, Chapada de Minas, Matas de Minas, and Cerrado), and so begin our further education on the world’s largest coffee producing country.
