Colombia ANEI

Cupping notes

A sweet and juicy coffee with apricot, apple, gooseberry, chocolate and piña colada notes.

Description

ANEI are an organisation of 600 families belonging to 4 indigenous native communities in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá.

The organisation was founded in 1995 by Aurora Izquierdo, the first Arhuaca native woman from the community of Yewrwa to study in Bogotá, to help develop the economy and living conditions of native and farmer communities in the region.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá regions are excellent for coffee production, with rich ecosystems, volcanic soils and good drainage. Coffee is typically harvested from October to March, and smallholder families deliver coffee to one of three collection centres: Valledupar, Pueblo Bello and Codazzi. Coffee is processed using the Washed method, which involves pulping, wet fermentation and sun-drying on raised beds or patios. The varietals grown in this region include Typica, Caturra, Bourbon, Castillo, Colombia, F6, Tabi and San Bernardo.

The ANEI association has created several initiatives that support the native communities of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá in a multidimensional and considered approach. Sacred Sierra is a 10-year program that contributes to the conservation and sustainability of water sources, forests and sacred places in the area, protecting natural resources and demonstrating ecological alternatives to industrialised societies. The Weaver Women’s initiative addresses gender equality and food sovereignty, improving local families’ infrastructure and quality of life. The Young Seeders program seeks to engage with young people in the community, linking them with the organisational processes and empowering them through agriculture.
